As per the latest information by a passenger from Coromandel Express, below was the incident scenario:

"Coromandel Express was on high speed like over 100 to 110 km/hr and they were at the end of the coaches travelling from Howrah to Chennai. All of a sudden, near Bahanaga Railway station, they felt a huge jerk and sound. When they came out of that, they saw many coaches of the train are not on the track rather scattered here and there. People were screaming for help, water etc.. They got to know that while coming from Howrah side, near by this station, there was a side track towards a different platform, where a goods train was already standing.

But Coromandel train didn't run in its track, rather it took the diversion towards the other platform where the goods train was halted. So, this passenger train hit the engine of the Goods train, which immediately started going on the air and around 15 coaches were derailed immediately and scattered here and there. At the same time, Yeshwanthpur to Howrah Train was also crossing the same railway station.

Due to this accident on the other platform,  around 1-2 coaches of Coromandel express also hit the last 2-3 coaches of Yeshwanthpur-Howrah train and they were detailed too. This entire sequence of hitting with one another and people suffering, stuck inside the train along with dead bodies, rescue operation was so heart wrenching and terrifying".

Another passenger said, "He was sitting on the train, and a few were standing near by the gate". When the incident happened, they started feeling that the train was going out of the track and saw that the people who were standing near the gate died and they were hit badly by the seats and with each other".

Dead bodies are kept in different places. Around 160 dead bodies are yet to be identified and the rest dead bodies are identified by their family members.
